Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Mazda CX-9

Today in our 2013 Mazda CX-9, we'll be having a look at and installing the CURT Class 2 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C12112. All right. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, it's tucked up nicely behind our fascia here. So what that means is when we're loading cargo into our hatch area, we don't have to worry about running our shin into the hitch. We have an industry standard 1/2 inch diameter hitch pin hole here, to secure any of our hitch mounted accessories.

At the end of our receiver, we have this nice collar that's welded on to give us a finished look and help improve the strength of the receiver itself. Welded on the bottom are round tubular safety chain loops, which have a fairly decent size opening. So we shouldn't have much problem at all hooking our safety chain hooks onto them. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch mount-on accessory you may need, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or a cargo carrier. You're looking at about 13 1/2 inches from the ground to the top of the receiver opening and about five inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most part of the back bumper.

Now we've gone over some features. We'll show you how to get it installed. Okay, we're underneath our vehicle right now. We have attachment points in either side of our frame rail on the inside edge of it. We'll point those out to you right now.

So you can see I've already circled our tapping points that we're using. The driver's side is the same way. We're looking at the passenger side right now. These are existing well nuts inside the frame. Now, it's a good idea to spray some lubricant inside of there, and use a pipe brush, which we have available on our website, that's part number 814092.

And run that in and out a few times to clean out the threads. We want to do this on all of our attachment points on both sides. Over time, you'll find that they can have rust build up inside of them or dirt or debris and wanna make sure they're clean, so that way your hardware goes in and out easily. All right. As you can see, we have two different size bolts. The smaller bolt will go in the smaller hole and all three of our larger attachment points get the same size bolt. We have conical tooth washer on both of our bolts. The teeth will face away from the bolt head towards the hitch. Now keep in mind, everything we do at one side will repeat on the other side. So with an extra set of hands, we'll raise the hitch into position and secure it in place to the provided hardware. All right, so we're working it in around our exhaust and our rear fascia. All right. Now we'll use a 19 millimeter socket to tighten down our larger bolts. And we'll use a 13 millimeter for the smaller bolt. Now we'll torque all our hardware to the amount specifying in the instructions. And that completes our look at an installation of the CURT Class 2 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C12112, on our 2013 Mazda CX-9..

This hitch was very easy to install on my 2014 Mazda CX-9. Only one slight issue - when I lower the spare tire, I now have to jiggle the tire part way down to get it to come out all the way, but not a big deal. While the hitch looks good, it is not very noticeable under the car which is important to me. etrailer was the cheapest price I found, even less than Amazon, and free next day shipping. It was shipped UPS and the box was heavily damaged on receipt. No damage to the product, but I'm glad etrailer securely taped the hardware kit to the hitch otherwise it may have been lost. I'm very happy with this hitch.

I would love to give you all 5 stars, unfortunately, I was missing essential components to get the hitch installed, mainly the bolts and washers. Bag of bolts/washers that was attached to the hitch was all ripped so pieces all fell out and were loosed in the box. The box was then damaged in shipping so more than half of the parts fell out of box before it go to me. I did call and yes you are sending the missing parts but I already had an appointment to have hitch installed the same day I received it because I need to tow my camper, reason for the hitch. Anyway, I ended up going to hardware store to purchase the bolts and washer's needed, substandard product, did not have the hardness grade. I had hitch installed with these parts and when the new parts are received in mail will have to have it reinstalled with the parts that should have been used in the first place.
The hitch itself is nice, easy to install. Hopefully it will be just as easy to uninstall and reinstall with the appropriate bolts/washers if when the arrive.

I have ordered 3 hitches from etrailer in the last 5 years. They all work great, arrived without damage and fit my vehicle. I had to call about one of them I ordered to make sure it was the correct fit and spoke to customer service, they were very helpful. I appreciate the simplicity of the website as well. Thanks!

Great hitch for a great price
Got this
hitch for my wife's Mazda CX-9. Shipping was very fast.
I installed this hitch by myself in less than an hour. It helps to have some one support the hitch while you screw in the first few bolts. The only tricky part was getting the hitch into place due to the heat shields, but you just have to work at it. I removed the spare to give me some extra room which really helped.

We haven't installed the hitch or electrical kit but everything arrived quickly. I plan on inventorying the box after Christmas and installing in January weather permitting.

Arrived earlier than expected and went on without a "hitch!" Just kidding - great service and product. So happy my FIL mentioned this company to me and recommended that I purchase from them instead of my normal go-to Amazon.

  • Recommended Hitch With Adapter For 2014 Mazda CX9 With 1.25 Thule T2 Bike Rack
I spoke with my contact at Curt and they told me that the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole on the Curt Trailer Hitch part # C12112, to the outer edge of the bumper on your 2014 Mazda CX-9 is 3-1/2 inches. I checked the dimensions on the Thule T2 Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH9045, and found that the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the bike rack when folded up is 3-1/2 inches. That would put the bike carrier so close to the back...

Your 2010 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD can be fitted with two different classes of hitch, either a 1-1/4-inch Class II from Curt, part # C12112, or a 2-inch Class III from any of several makers. All can be seen by clicking on the link provided for you. A 4-bike platform rack can be used only on a 2-inch hitch like Curt # 13575. When we installed this hitch on your car we found that the hitch pin hole was 4-3/4-inches from the back edge of the bumper. Please see the linked video. This...

  • Using a 1-1/4" to 2" Hitch Expander for a Bike Rack on a 2014 Mazda CX-9
To use a 1-1/4 to 2 inch hitch expander you first need to look at the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch on your 2014 Mazda CX-9. There should be a sticker on the hitch that lists the tongue weight capacity. The use of an expander will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. The combined weight of the bike rack and bikes will need to under the reduced tongue weight capacity. Another thing to consider is the bike rack itself. Not all bike racks are rated for...
