Question:

I am wanting to install a brake controller on my class A motor home 2015 Thor ACE, Ford F-550 chassis. It currently has a flat 4 plug and no brake controller . I am wanting to add a brake controller and a 7 way plug for a trailer with brakes. I need to know what I will need to complete the job. Thanks

To install a 7-way and brake controller on your 2015 Thor ACE Class A Motorhome you'll need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7. The 4-way connector on the # ETBC7 will connect to the 4-way you already have in place and from there you'll just need to ground your white wire to the frame and connect your black (12v power) and blue (brake controller) wires to the included 10awg wire and run it up to your engine bay.

Now you'll most likely need more wire # 10-2-1 since this kit is designed for a normal vehicle so I recommend getting a rough measurement from the back of your motorhome to the front and adding on another 5' to route your wire into the dash if you're wanting to do it all with just one length instead of splicing in additional wire. Anywhere you splice in wire I highly recommend using some heat shrink butt connectors # DW05745-10 to ensure a watertight seal for your connection. You'll need a crimping tool # PTW30764 and some wire strippers # PT43ZR as well.

Your blue wire will need to go to the cold side of the brake light switch. This means that the wire will only have power running to it when the brake pedal is depressed. You can following the post of the brake pedal up to the wiring and use a tester # PTW2993 to see which wire lights up when the pedal is depressed.

If you plan on flat towing a vehicle in the future then I recommend getting the Brake Buddy Stealth Supplemental Braking System # HM39530 as it works as both a trailer brake controller and also functions as a supplemental braking system for your tow vehicle. This will save you the time of having to do a second installation and from having one more thing in the way. I've attached a video below so you can check it out.

If you only plan on towing trailers with your motorhome then I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller - Dash Knob - 1 to 2 Axles - Proportional # RED24FR along with the Redarc Plug-and-Play Wiring Harness for Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers # 331-TPH-005 for a simply plug and play installation. I have one in my truck and I love how small the controller is and how easy it is to use.

The Liberty does only work for trailers with up to 2 axles so if you were planning on towing a triple axle trailer you would need to use the Elite # RED63RR instead.

If you have any other questions or need any other advice let me know and I can help get you all set.
