Trailer Hitch and 7-Way Wiring Connector Installation on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question:

hi I have a 04 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 6cyclinder. I am looking to do a hitch with the 7 round connector and also a trailer brake so I am able to tow my camper. I see there are many kits available and real easy to install with the 4 flat connector but could u help me put a package together with a hitch class 3 and all the correct wiring and a brake controller. that way I can have the 7 round connector and a electric brake that will all work for my jeep. it does not have factory towing. if u could help me get everything I need to complete this job would be much appreciated. would like to order asap but do not want to order the wrong stuff as I see there is many different things available. thanks,

The hitch that you referenced the Curt # 13051, is indeed a class III hitch that is confirmed as a fit for your 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have included a video of this installation for your reference.

Since your Cherokee does not have any existing wiring harness you are again correct that there are several plug in applications that will establish a 4-way trailer wiring harness for your vehicle. To install a fully functional 7-way connector for your Jeep you will have to start by establishing a 4-way trailer wiring harness.

For your Cherokee, I recommend using the Curt Custom fit vehicle wiring harness # C55369. This connector plugs directly into your existing vehicle wiring harness in the cargo area of your vehicle. This wiring harness includes a tail light converter that will convert your Jeep wiring to be compatible with your trailer wiring configuration. Additionally this wiring harness includes a fuse that is installed in-line with the converter.

I suggest to see if you can route the 4-way vehicle connection under the vehicle. You might be able to access this though the spare tire access area, or through other areas in the cargo compartment. Please make sure the while routing the wire the wiring insulation will not be be in a location that would compromise the insulation of the wiring. It you will be using an existing access hole please make sure that a grommet like the # A11GB, or some wire loom like the # 459075-1 is used to protect the wiring insulation.

Once you have established the 4-way on your 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, you can then use the # ETBC7 to establish a 7-way vehicle wiring connection. I have included a helpful article that walks you through the steps for installing the # ETBC7 to establish a brake signal at the vehicle connection point. The vehicle connection on the # ETBC7 will be a 7-way blade style of connection.

For a brake controller for your Jeep Grand Cherokee I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. This is a proportional brake controller that includes a continuous diagnostic display. It is also highly adjustable depending on your towing needs and preferences.

I have included links to the parts referenced above, several helpful articles and several videos of your reference.
