Switching From 4.80-8 to 4.80-12 Trailer Wheels and Tires With a 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern

Question:

Hello, Want to increase the tire size from a 4.8/8 to a 4.8/12. It is a 5 lug 4.5. I have 4 of clearance now on my fender so the height should be fine. I am looking at Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels - AM30670. It has a pilot hub of 3.1. My pilot hub is under 3. Is it ok to put a larger tire on a smaller hub? Does the hub provide any alignment stability or once the 5 bolts are secure it does nothing. Please advise. Thanks

First, I do recommend verifying exactly how much clearance you have. The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 you are looking at is 20.7" tall while your Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30020 is 16.1" tall. The 4.6" difference will be 2.3" loss of fender clearance. It is recommended to have 3" of vertical clearance for suspension travel with the taller tires.

The wheel that comes on the set above is lug piloted and will center on the wheel studs with the Lug Nuts # AM90049. It is not hub piloted so you will still be able to use them on your hubs.

I recommend using the Lionshead Trailer Wheel Center Cap w/ Snap-In Plug # LHCS102-SI60C with the new wheels. These are stainless steel and will not rust or corrode giving you a good-looking wheel set.

If you prefer the 4.8-12 in aluminum, you can get the wheel # LH45FR and the tire # AM10062 and have them mounted at a local shop upon arrival.
