Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation For A 2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Question:

We are upgrading from our travel trailer to a 5th wheel. Not familiar with 5th wheel hitchs, I have been reading a slider is better for short beds and making 90 turns . I really would rather have a fixed 5th wheel hitch. I dont think 90 degrees turns are a regular occurrence. Looking at a BandW companion for my 2020 GMC 3500 Denali. Any thoughts are appreciated.

It's highly recommended to use a slider hitch for bed lengths at 6 to 6-1/2' or a sidewinder pin box with a fixed hitch for beds 5 to 5-1/2' in length to ensure that the nose of the fifth wheel doesn't make contact with the cab of your truck.

That being said there is no legal requirements for you to use either, you just won't be able to make tight turns and you're taking on the risk of damaging your truck/trailer if they come in contact.

The B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch for Chevy/GMC Towing Prep Package # BWRVK3710 you referenced is compatible with the OEM prep package that GM offers. It drops down into the pucks inside the bed for an quick and easy attachment point that gives you a clear bed when not in use.

If later on down the road you realize you do need to make tighter turns you can upgrade your 5th wheel's pin box to a Sidewinder, which will push the pivot point back 22" for extra turning clearance. You'll just need to ensure that the Sidewinder you purchase matches the bolt pattern of your current pin box.
