Dexter Trailer Spring Over-Under Conversion Kit

Question:

I have a 2011 Starcraft AR One 15rb. Single axle, double eye springs, and rated at 3200 gvw. This trailer no ground clearance at all! I would like to raise it up and get radial tires that have a higher load rating. Will this kit work for me? Thank You

Helpful Expert Reply:

For a trailer with a 3,200 GVW, you most likely have a 3,500 lb axle, which is typically 2-3/8 inches in diameter. If this is the case, you would want to use part # K71-384-00.

The Over-Under Conversion Kit you referenced is designed for 3 inch diameter axles, which typically have a 5,200 or 6,000 lb capacity.

When using an over/under conversion kit, you will need to make sure the spring seat provided with the kit is tack welded to the axle. You would not want to simply turn the axle over and reuse the current spring seats, as trailer axles have a bow in them, and flipping the axle itself would negatively affect your wheel alignment. Placing the leaf springs on top of the axle and raising the ride height of your camper can change its handling characteristics, making it more susceptible to trailer sway.

If you would care to reply with your tire size, I would be happy to make some tire recommendations for you.

Also, keep in mind that using a tire with a higher load rating will not increase the load bearing capabilities of your camper. You will still be limited by the lowest rated component, whether it be the spindles or the axle.
