Upgrading Dexter 8-222 Trailer Hubs
Question:
Hello, I bought a trailer that is a 2001 Hudson model HSE16 Pro series. The axles are Dexter. Stamped on the hub is 8-222 and A8. I believe they are 4500 Lbs. axles. I would Like to get rid of the current hubs and go to a 6 or 8 lug. Obviously, I would replace the seals and other hardware as well. Do you sell any products to accomplish this? Or do you have a direction I may be able to go?

The Dexter 8-222 was used on a mobile home axle, according to my research. Mobile home axles are meant for a one time use, so there aren't compatible replacement hubs available.
If you need replacement bearings and seals, you will use # L68149 for the inner and # LM67048 for the outer. For the Grease Seal you will need # 10-40.
If you can provide the hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center distance, we might have an off the shelf replacement axle that uses common bearing sizes that would allow use of a 6 lug wheel. For instance, the Dexter # 6340624 5200 lb capacity axle has a hub face to hub face distance of 95 inches and the spring seats are 80 inches apart on center. The axle can use a # 8-201-5UC3-EZ 6 bolt hub/drum and # 23-105-106 brake assemblies or for an idler hub, use # 8-213-5UC1-EZ.
Also available is a 89 inch hub face/74 inch spring seat 5200 lb axle as part # 8327820 or an 86-1/2 inch hub face/71-1/2 inch spring seat axle as part # 8327816. Both would use the hubs/brake assemblies mentioned above.
If none of the axle options mentioned above will work for you, you can custom order an axle from Dexter (we don't offer custom axles).
Keep in mind that increasing your axle/hub capacity won't necessarily increase the capacity of your trailer. You'll still be limited to the capacity of the lowest rated component on the trailer.
