Installing An RV Air Conditioner System In A Converted Cube Van Camper

Question:

Howdy, Im turning a small cube van into a camper. My dimensions 10foot long, 78inch wide and 6foot high . As you can see my ceiling height is limited so Im trying to fine a combo unit ac/heat that doesnt come through ceiling very much. Preferably 1inch or less. Thank you for your help.

The first step to installing any RV air conditioner systems on your cube van will be to reinforce the roof to hold the weight of the rooftop unit and to also increase the thickness of the roof to accommodate the rooftop unit and the air distribution box.

The Advent Air RV Air Conditioner w/ Air Distribution Box, Start Capacitor, and Heat Strip - 13,500 Btu # ACM135CH requires a roof thickness of 2-1/2" to 5" thick and the air distribution box is going to stick 2-1/2" down from the ceiling. It includes a heat strip to give you a heating option as well as a start capacitor to help jumpstart the AC when a campsite or generator doesn't provide enough power.

The Furrion Chill HE RV Air Conditioner System - Manual - 13,500 Btu - White # FR52PR requires a 3-1/2" to 6" roof thickness and the air distribution box is going to stick 1-1/2" down from the ceiling. It has an optional heat strip # FR35SR available to offer you a heating option and also includes a start capacitor to help jumpstart the AC when a campsite or generator doesn't provide enough power. This unit has more efficient cooling and heating than the Advent Air unit.

Both of these units will require you to increase the thickness of the roof. In the attached Advent Air installation video you can see that David just used some plywood around the opening for the unit to increase the thickness. You could do this on the roof of your van instead and install the Furrion # FR52PR to keep the amount of space used inside the van to a minimum.
