Parts Needed To Flat Tow a 2014 Ford F-250 or 2017 Ford Explorer Sport With a Tiffin Allegro RV

Question:

What system and parts would you recommend to flat tow a 2014 F250 4x4 and a 2017 Ford Explorer Sport 4x4. I would like to set both of them up to tow behind our motorhome. We have a 2021 40 ft Tiffin Allegro Red Diesel.

First you will need to start with the baseplates. For that I recommend the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # 4428-3 for your 2014 Ford F-250. Your 2017 Ford Explorer Sport will need either the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-524446-5 (Okay for Adaptive Cruise Control, No Active Grill Shutters) or Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-524445-5 (Okay Active Grill Shutters, No Adaptive Cruise Control).

With the weight of your F-250 I recommend using the Roadmaster BlackHawk 2 All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-422 as it is rated for up to 10,000lbs. This non-binding tow bar makes disconnecting your towed vehicle much easier when you get to your destination. The RoadMaster BlackHawk 2 All Terrain Combo Towing Kit # RM-9243-3 will provide you with all the safety cables, locks covers and wiring needed to integrate the lights on one of your vehicles to work off the motorhome. A Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit # RM-152-98146-7 will provide you with the additional wiring for your 2nd vehicle and also gives you a spare 7-way to 6-way power cord incase it becomes damaged over time. Having the wiring integrated saves you time hooking up and helps to prevent you from forgetting a portable light system in the other vehicle.

The Explorer will need to have the battery disconnected when you are towing. I recommend having a Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect with Switch # RM-766 installed so that all you have to do is push a button when its time to tow.

I recommmend using the Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System # HM39524 as you can use it in either vehicle. You will need a 2nd Dash Mount Connector # HM39342, Breakaway System # HM39340, and Battery Charge Kit # BB54FR for the 2nd vehicle. You will be able to monitor and adjust the braking force from the wireless controller that will go in your 2021 Tiffin Allegro Red Diesel.

It is important that while you are flat towing either vehicle that your tow bars are within 3" of level. Since you have 2 different vehicles it is likely that the tow bars will need different adapter to be the right height. We also have a Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter # RM-077-6 that has a 2" offset receiver and a 6" offset receiver that may solve the problem with one adapter. Once you have the baseplates installed on your vehicles you will be able to determine the connection height and compare it to your Allegro receiver to determine the right adapter if one is needed. I can help you find the correct adapter once you have all the different measurements for the 3 vehicles.
