Will 1,400 lb Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Hitch Work For 750 to 800 lb Tongue Weight
Question:
I have a 2021 jay flight 232rb. I am interested in equalizer wdh the 1000/10000 is plenty for my trailer. At 770 tongue and 5300 gross. Would the 1400/14000 model work properly as I may be upgrading to a heavier trailer in the future.

The answer to your question - technically - is yes, for your trailer with a 770 lb tongue weight, you can use the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 14,000 lbs GTW, 1,400 lbs TW # EQ37140ET. However, it is definitely not recommended, and the reason for that is the spring bars will be rated so much higher than your tongue weight that there won't be the proper amount of force on them, which will result in you having a very stiff ride and trailer that will bounce. You want a WDH where your tongue weight is right in the middle of the system's capacity, and that was the 1,000 lb rated Equal-i-zer:
- Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW # EQ37100ET
The # EQ37100ET is rated for tongue weights between 600 lbs and 1,000 lbs so your 770 lb tongue weight is perfect for this hitch. It is the best overall system as well to level out your ride and provide sway control so you made a great choice.
However, if you were looking to change trailers soon there is a different option you can go with, from Blue Ox. Their SwayPro systems allow you to simply change out the arms if you get a larger (or smaller trailer) in the future. The Equal-i-zer can't do that as their spring bars have different dimensions based on their ratings. So for example, what you could do now is use the following:
- Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW # BLU66FR
Then if you go to a larger trailer in the future you could simply upgrade the arms to the 1,000 lbs - 1,500 lbs Replacement Spring Bars # BXW4008.
