Tekonsha Brake Controller Not Supplying Power When Pressing the Brake Pedal

Question:

Hi All, I am having a weird problem i am hoping someone can help with. I have a: TEKONSHA P2 PRODIGY BRAKE CONTROLLER on my 2009 Triton ML When i use the manual brake override on the controller, i can hear the caravan brakes go on, and the caravan brake lights go on. When i use the pedal, the brake controller seems to read it sometimes lagged tho, sometimes i need to press the pedal a few times and i can hear power going to the caravan brakes they hum, tho i dont think they are going on very hard compared to the override but the brake lights on the caravan are not going on, the cables to the brake lights are getting power when i read the volts not enough for the lights to come on bright , but it seems to be lower then when i manually put the brake controller manual override on . The brake controller shows a number 0-12 depending on the braking power it will apply, and i can get it to read the full 12 on the pedal press. Its as if the brake controller is reading that i am pressing the pedal, but not outputting enough power down the line to the caravan.

It sounds like the connection for the red wire on your brake controller harness is loose and that's why you're not getting enough power back to your trailer's brakes. This wire attaches to the brake switch wire that tells the controller to send power from the black wire through the blue wire back to the brakes. I recommend checking this connection and then take your trailer out and retest your brakes. You can also check the ground/blue wires for connections that are loose/bad. The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller item # 90885 you referenced is a proportional brake controller. The manual override will work when not in motion but you will need to be decelerating for your trailer's brakes to be triggered.

I have attached a couple articles related to troubleshooting brake controllers. Another issue you could be having is how your brake controller is mounted. If it is tilted or turned to one side this will affect its performance.
