What PSI Should My Trailer Tires Be Filled To When Towing?

Question:

Hello. I am sure that you have answered this question a lot, but, I am having a difficult time from my tire dealer. They just installed new tires on my Popup camper. The placard inside the trailer door states 5.30x12 Load range C and that is what they installed. The problem is that they said I should use 55 PSI. The placard inside the trailer door states that I should use 80 PSI. I am afraid to run them at 55 because they may heat up. What tire pressure do you recommend? Please help. Thank you.

Unless otherwise noted from the tire manufacturer, you should run your tires at the full psi they are rated to. As an example, the Taskmaster 5.30R12 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # TT53012C is rated to 1,050 pounds at 80 psi and should therein be filled to 80 psi. This will keep the wear even and will extend the life of the tire. Under filling them will definitely cause them to run hotter and wear quicker or unevenly, which will reduce the life of the tire. This will also mean you will need to replace them more often.

So in short, fill your tires to what they are supposed to be filled to and you will be a happy camper.
