Troubleshooting Left Hand Turn Signal Malfunctioning on Trailer Plug

Question:

I have a 2002 Chevy duramax hd. The left hand turn signal at the plug has no power. I checked the fuse under the hood and it is good. Has power to both sides of the fuse. Any suggestions?

Checking to see if the fuse is intact and the power to it and behind it is definitely a great start to determining what the issue might be why your left turn signal is not working properly. Since this issue is isolated to only one function I am leaning to towards it being a broken connection.

First I would check all connections points and make sure that the wires are secure and free of damage. Look for any corrosion or wire damage within the connector, as well as the wires leading to the connector itself.

You could also further isolate the issue and determine if the 7-way connector is causing the problem or if there is a problem with the vehicle wiring. To do this you would need to locate your trucks factory wiring connector that would connect to this 7-way. This is usually located on the driver's side of the vehicle behind the rear axle. Once you have found this connection point, please disconnect the 7-way wiring harness. Then using a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, to test the sockets on the vehicles wiring harness connector while the left turn signal is activated. If you confirm that one of these sockets activates the tester, then the vehicle is supplying power to the 7-way connector. If this is the case it is possible there is an issue with the 7-way connector, and it may need to be replaced.

If you do not find that one of the socket locations activates the tester while the turn signal is on then there is most likely an issue with the vehicle wiring. Then I would advise checking the wiring for any sings damage or for any breaks in the insulation, worn, or any areas that you can see any exposed wire.

Another possibility would be a grounding issue. To check for any grounding issues, I would recommend making sure that the connector has a good ground to a metal surface, it is not recommended that the ground be connected to an aluminum surface. Then make sure that there are no gaps on the connector points, or any corrosion, road grime, or any build up that may interfere resulting in a bad ground.

I have included a couple of helpful articles about trouble shooting wiring issues for your reference.
