Recommended Equalizer Upgrade For A 5,200 Pound Axle On A Horse Trailer

Question:

Looking to get advice on which equalizer upgrades would be an option for my tandem axle horse trailer. It is a tandem axle with Lippert 5200 pound axles part # 319108, wheel base of 33 inches. The current equalizers have a spread between centers of the bolt holes where they attach to the leaf springs of 6 inches, measurement from the hanger hole at the top to the leaf spring bolt hole is about 4 and3/4 inches. The 2 options I found that seemed closest had bolt hole to bolt hole measurements of either 5 and1/2 or 7 inches, not sure how close they need to be to my current 6 inch spread. Looking for the option that will last the longest. thanks

With your axles having a 33 inch wheel base and 5,200 pounds of capacity, we definitely have a couple options available. Both of these options will definitely work with your 33 inch wheel base and can be used with 5,200 pound axles.

The first will be the Lippert Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers - Double Eye Springs - Tandem Axle - 5K to 8K - Greasable Pivot # LC145546. This will match your 4 inch height, but will be a bit longer at 7-1/2 inches. This shouldn't be an issue, but it may end up spreading your wheel base out every so slightly.

The next is the MORryde Premium Rubber Suspension Kit for Tandem Axle Trailer - 33" Wheelbase - 5.2K to 7K # MR97ZR. One of the things I really like about this system is that it includes their steel X-Factor crossmember that acts as a strengthener and takes some of the stress off the frame and or hangers. The equalizer for this is also very similar in size to your current one. The measurement from the center on the bolt hole to the center of the other is right at 5-13/16", but this will be a bit taller than your current ones so you will get a small amount of lift, typically 1 to 2 inches at the very most.

Between these two options, I prefer the MORryde # MR97ZR. Mostly due to the included brace, but they also have 1 to 1-1/4 inches more travel than the Lippert # LC145546.
