Recommended Weight Distribution System for 5000 lb Starcraft Launch Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a 2013 Toyota Tacoma with tow package capable up to 6500 lbs. Ive pulled boats and other trailers up to approx 1700 lbs with little sway. Just recently purchased a camper with gross vehicle weight of 5000 lbs but actual weight is 3250 lbs empty. The trailer has tandem tires with electric brakes. With a tongue weight at 10 or 325 lbs and estimated weight of 200 - 300 lbs for hitch and cargo behind rear tires in truck do you think I need a load leveling anti sway hitch? if so what hitch do you recommend?

Expert Reply:

When the weight of the trailer gets to the point where it is greater than 50% of the weight of the vehicle towing it, we recommend using a weight distribution system. Since you have a camper which has tall sides on it that can act like a sail when buffeted by crosswinds or turbulence from passing traffic, you really should choose a system with an integrated sway control component.

From the information you supplied (thanks for that, by the way), you're dealing with a maximum tongue weight of just over 600 lbs. The Reese Pro round bar system, part # RE94FR which covers trailer tongue weights from 400-800 lbs would be absolutely perfect for your smaller camper. It'll provide effective weight distribution which will eliminate the sag in your rear suspension along with sway control that's effective on mild to moderate trailer sway. The system includes a pre-installed 2-5/16 inch trailer ball.

I've linked to a product description video featuring the system I recommended.
