Installing a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller on a 2014 Porsche Cayenne

Question:

I bought a 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket and Curt Class III Receiver Hitch for my cayenne diesel 2014. What else I need to wire it to my trailer.

Trailer connector # HM40975 that you purchased is meant as a replacement for a 2014 Porsche Cayenne that came with a factory 7-Way trailer connector. If yours did not then it will have to be hardwired in.

The first part you will need is harness # PK11998 which plugs into the back of connector # HM40975. Next, you will need to install a wiring converter, # C59496, which hardwires into the tail light wiring on the vehicle.

Then, after the # C59496 is installed you will cut off the 4-Way end and hardwire the wires from it to harness PK11998 as follows:

White wire to white wire (I would also then ground both to the vehicle frame)
Yellow wire from C59496 to red wire on PK11998
Green wire to green wire
Brown wire to brown wire
Yellow on PK11998 is for reverse lights. If needed it will need to splice into a reverse light wire

That will leave blue and black wires. The blue wire is for electric trailer brakes and requires a brake controller in the vehicle. The black wire is for 12 volt power. So you will need wiring kit # 5506 which comes with wire, circuit breakers (you will need the 30 amp and 40 amp breakers from the kit) and other parts to wire up the blue and black wires.

There are some special circumstances on the Cayenne when you install a brake controller. You will need the following parts that are available from a Volkswagen dealer:

1 connector housing (#1J0-972-782) and
2 wire/terminal assemblies (#000-979-228)

Cut the wires from both wire assemblies in half so that you have 4 wires, each with a clip on one end and bare wire on the other. Connect the bare end of each of these wires to one of the wires on your brake controller, then slip the other end of each wire into its appropriate slot on the housing. The slots are numbered to make it easier to connect each wire correctly. I have included a link to a help article that covers this.

For a brake controller I recommend the Brake EVN # TK63VR because with it you will not have to go through the special installation (besides what is listed above) involving relays (noted in the help article I have linked).
