Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for a Camper Trailer

Question:

Hello. I would like to order a weight distribution hitch. My tow vehicle is a 2014 Toyota Landcruiser. I am towing a Starcraft Comet 12rt pop up camper trailer with a front loading deck. The travel length of the trailer is 215, the dry hitch weight is 460 lbs, unloaded trailer weight is 2760 lbs, cargo capacity is 2090 lbs, with a gross trailer weight of 4850. I used to tow this camper with a Ford Expedition EL and I didnt have any problems at all. However, I sold the Ford and now tow with the Landcruiser. The Landcruiser really sags in the back with the nose pointing up. I dont have any problems with sway control. I just want to get the load leveled. Your site is great in that I can indicate my tongue weight and trailer weight to get a list of hitches. But, I have never used a weight distribution hitch before, and just want to make sure I choose the right one for the application listed above. Thanks so much!

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

Tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight, so you would be looking at a tongue weight range of 485 lbs to 730 lbs. The Curt WD System part # C17051 should work well as it has a tongue weight range of 600-800 lbs.
