Maximum Capacity of Cargo Carrier Used on 2014 Subaru Impreza
Question:
If I install this class III receiver on my 2014 Impreza and put the Reese PS10401-10402 carrier on it, how much weight could I safely carry on that cargo carrier?

Expert Reply:
The capacity of any towing system will always be limited by the capacity of its lowest-rated component.
Although the Reese # PS10401-10402 cargo carrier has a 400 lb capacity and the EcoHitch # 306-X7211 you'd looked at has a 525 lb tongue weight capacity (maximum amount of downward force that can safely be applied to the hitch) the 2014 Subaru Impreza owner's manual lists a maximum tongue weight of 200 lbs. Therefore, you'll want to abide by the 200 lb maximum mentioned in the owner's manual even though the hitch and the carrier you'd asked about have higher weight ratings. Given the 100 lb weight of the Reese # PS10401-10402 carrier, you'd be left with a cargo capacity of 100 lbs.
