Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch And Sidewinder For A 2021 Ram 3500 With RamBoxes

Question:

Hello, Kevin answered my last question about my 2021 Ram 3500 with Ram boxes. He suggested the Anderson sidewinder but I am interested in the 5th airborn with air ride sidewinder. I see there are 3 choices, which one is right for my truck and will I need a custom wedge which one or does it come with one? And which hitch works best with these turrets? Thanks!! I haven’t bought the camper yet, is the 5th airborn air ride comparable with this hitch setup? Are there better options? I appreciate your help, I want to get this right. Your company is awesome and I will be purchasing everything you suggest for my families safety. Thanks.

I still recommend using a rotating pin box due to your 2021 Ram 3500 having RamBoxes. The weight capacity of the pin box and the 5th wheel hitch are the other important factors here.

Since you don't have a camper yet you don't know what the GVWR is. The Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30047 I recommended before has a GTW of 16,000lbs and the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30928 has GTW 20,000. You can always go high and get the heavier weight capacity hitch but it will cost you more. Both of these hitches will use the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50085-58 to attach to your truck.

For the # RP30047 you'll need the 5th Airborne Custom Wedge for Select Series Fifth Wheels # SWW-03.

For the # RP30928 you'll need the Sidewinder Wedge Kit # RP44FR.

While you're searching for the right 5th wheel camper for your family you'll want to take a look at the pin box it has to ensure it has one that has a compatible sidewinder replacement. Pin boxes have specific bolt patterns so they aren't all interchangeable. For example the 5th Airborne Premium 5th Wheel Air Ride King Pin w/ Sidewinder and Turret # RP61422 will replace a Fabex 663, Fabex 665, Lippert 0719, Lippert 1621, Lippert 1621HD, M and M 663, and M and M 665.

The Reese 5th Airborne is a great option to replace whatever standard pin box you'll get when you purchase your 5th wheel. It has an enclosed air spring that absorbs shock and adjusts for a smooth ride. The air bag can be repositioned with 2 easy-to-access screws to better support varying loads; Move forward for light tongue weights/Move backward for heavy tongue weights.

I recommend making a visit to your local RV dealer and finding the design that you like the most and writing down the GVWR and Pin Box model on it and then coming back to the site to pick the correct hitch and pin box for your needs.
