What is the Best 4-Bike Rack for a Tesla Model Y with a Hitch Weight Capacity of 160 Pounds?

Question:

Im looking for a 4 bike carrier for a Tesla Model Y preferably a platform style. I will be carrying 3 regular bikes around 35lbs each and a kids bike. What bike rack would you recommend? The manual states: The hitch receiver is designed to support vertical loads up to 160 lbs 72 kg. When carrying bicycles, skis, or other items on the Model Y hitch, always check to ensure that the maximum weight is not exceeded.

I have a solution for you. As far as a lightweight 4-bike platform rack for your Tesla Model Y's 2-inch hitch receiver, the lightest 4-bike platform rack we carry is the Saris SuperClamp EX 4 Bike Platform Rack # SA4026F (63 pounds). With that weight, adding your three adult bikes and a kid's bike will put you over your 160 pound limit of the hitch.

Your best option would be the hanging-style rack. The lightest 4-bike hanging-style rack we carry is the Swagman Original - 4 Bike Rack for 2" Trailer Hitches # S64400 (35 pounds). Even with this rack, with 3 adult bikes weighing 35 pounds, you will have a total of 145 pounds on the hitch with the Original. That leaves only 15 pounds available as far as weight capacity for the hitch for the kid's bike. For this rack, I recommend the Swagman Deluxe Bike Frame Adapter Bar # 64005. The bike frame adapter bar will give your kid's bike the straight horizontal plane required to mount onto the Swagman Original.

The ideal situation is to utilize a stronger hitch or to use the roof for a bike or two. Unfortunately, we do not currently carry any hitches for your Tesla Model Y or any roof rack system that would work with your glass roof. For a creative solution, you can use the SeaSucker Mini Bomber # 298-BM2006 or the SeaSucker Talon Roof Bike Rack # 298-BT1004 to alleviate some weight off the hitch.
