Tekonsha Vehicle Wiring Harness For a 1996 Ford Explorer With Factory Trailer Wiring

Question:

Hello there 1996 Ford Explorer XLT with dealer tow package. Does your connector controls both rear turn signals, both break lights, also the rear running lights when are turned on, as well as the license plates 2 lights. My harness actually has a connecter already attached to it. Not just a dust cover. Which has only 2 pins in it that run to the 2 license plate lights. One pin each. The harness has space for 8 pins but only 5 have a wire end for the pins. 2 are uses for the license plate lights which leaves the other 3 only. My question is how many pins are inside your connector and what spaces are they located in the connector. Also, I think I would need to add the 2 pins for the plate lights. Is there the red center in the connector that one can remove to add and rearrange the pins. I hope this makes sense.

The Tekonsha Tow Package Wiring Harness # 118241 for your 1996 Ford Explorer will have 4 pins located inside the connector. The 4 pins are located on the side with the pin that is located a 3 o'clock from the connector. These pins will control both turn signals, brake lights and the trailer running lights, they do not have points for the license plate lights as well. You will not be able to move the connectors around as they would have to share 2 of the same pins.

First be sure that you have located the correct connector as on the Explorer there can be multiple connectors. Typically it is found on the passenger side of the bumper rather than the drivers side as is commonly found on the Ford Ranger.

If you are unable to find the other connector than you will need to use the new Tekonsha harness and use Quick Splices # SWC502905-1 to wire in the license plate light. You will wire into the power wire and running light circuit for the plate light.
