Recommended 5-way Connector and Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2021 Mazda CX-9

Question:

I’m planning to purchase and install a hitch and wiring harness for my new 2021 Mazda AWD CX-9 Grand Touring. This is in preparation for a boat that comes with a 5 pin plug for activating the surge brakes on the trailer. I realize the wiring harness for the Mazda is a traditional 4 pin so I would also need to purchase the 4 to 5 pin adapter. The question I have is there a way I can just replace the 4 pin all together with the 5 pin and mount it straight to the hitch? I really don’t like the messy look of having all those extra wires and adapter from the 5 pin plug hanging all the time. Thanks.

I would be happy to help!

There is not a dedicated 5-way connector for your 2021 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD, but we can get you taken care of with something that will not be unsightly. I recommend the # 118278 which is a confirmed fit for your vehicle, and then converting it to a 5-way connector using the # C57187.

To pretty it up I recommend using some electrical tape to go around the 4-way connector on the adapter and on your vehicle, and on the wiring to keep it nice and bundled. Installing the 5-way connector into the bracket like the # C58303 so all of the wiring connections will be tucked up underneath the vehicle and out of sight. Some zip ties to keep it tucked up will go a long way.

If you do not already have the trailer hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite # 76020 which has a 675lb Tongue weight rating and 4500lb trailer weight rating which will be perfect for towing your boat, and the built in trailer connector bracket allows for a very clean way to get the 5-way connected.

Lastly you will also need a ball mount so I have included a link to a helpful article that goes over how to measure for the correct ball mount, and a link to all of our ball mounts for you to take a look at.

I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
