Recommended 7-Way and Trailer Brake Controller for 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

I have a 2018 Subaru Outback. It did not come with a factory tow package. I have installed a hitch and a 4 pin connector. I used CURT 56040 for the 4 connector. I am planning to install a 7 pin connector to tow a tear single axle camper. As it is not a boat, I am not concerned about reversing. I am thinking of getting: ETBC7, RED24FR, and RED69FR. Are these correct? The 7 pin connector will be connected to the rear bumper of the Subaru. Do you sell a backing plate that will help reinforce the connection? The instruction say that the red wire from RED69FR needs to be connected to the brake wire. Why is that required? I though RED24FR is a proportional controller. Would that not work without being connected to the brake wire? Thanks,

I have some great options for a brake controller and 7-way on a 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon. You can choose from wired like the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller part # RED24FR with Universal Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers part # RED69FR or wireless like the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180. They are both great options but the wireless route is much easier to install and does not require modifications to the vehicle like splicing into the stop light circuit (red wire). The wired option does require the stop light circuit connection as that's what wakes the unit up essentially.

If you go the wired route you will need the 4 to 7-Way with 4-Way Adapter part # ETBC7 but if you go the wireless route you can just use the 4 to 7-Way with 4-Way Adapter part # ETBC7L. These will both need to be drilled into a sturdy part of the vehicle like the bumper, there is no backing plate.
