In the atwood is the heating element behind the styrofoam on the back side of tank?

I am not sure exactly what water heater you have but the Atwood elements are typically on the same side of the heater as the removable panel. For a replacement element you'd want the part # CAM02143.

I added a photo which shows the location of the heating element of the Atwood Water Heater GC6AA-10E for you. It is item number 17 in the diagram. Atwood does recommend having a professional do the job if you are replacing it due to its location.
