Recommended Roof Rack And Kayak Carrier For 2011 Toyota Corolla

Question:

I am looking to transport a Hobie Outback, about 85lbs on a bare roof of a 2011 Toyota Corolla S model with sunroof. Is this compatible, and if so what size? Also, is it approved for a roof with a sunroof? Will I also need foam pads, or a foam mount with straps?

The Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars - 46" # RRVA118B-2 would work well for carrying a kayak on your 2011 Toyota Corolla. You'll also need the corresponding Legs # RRRLKVA and Fit Kit # DK152. This will allow you to use the slide-open feature of the sunroof, but I cannot say with certainty if it will allow you to tilt open the sunroof or not as that could possibly cause some interference; Rhino-Rack was also not able to confirm compatibility with the tilt feature.

You will want to add a kayak carrier to not only secure the kayak safely to the crossbars, but also protect the kayak from getting damaged or even damaging the roof rack. I think the best kayak carrier for your application is Rightline Gear Kayak Carrier 14-3/4" # RL100K10. This uses 14-3/4" foam blocks and included tie-downs to secure your kayak to the crossbars. I think this is the most economical option for you to safely carry your kayak on your vehicle's roof. I attached a demonstration video for this carrier.
