Recommended Dual Receiver Adapter To Tow Trailer and Carry Bike Rack W/ 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Question:
Hi—I have a 2012 Jeep JKU, towing a 16’ Scamp camper at about 2000lb I would like to add a dual-hitch adapter to include a bike rack, but that might need a hitch extender? I’m also looking at the type that clamps onto the hitch shaft, but again I’m not sure how to tell whether I’ll have room under the spare tire. Any ideas? Thanks.

I would be happy to help.
We have the Malone 2" Dual Purpose Hitch Receiver # MPG544 which is an extension and a dual receiver adapter so it has a good chance on clearing the spare tire on your 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.
You can verify this by measuring from the center of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch receiver to the furthest edge of the spare tire.
The # MPG544 measures 9" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the additional receiver as shown in the included diagram.
As you can see in the included video we installed this on a Jeep Wrangler and on that vehicle it cleared the spare tire, so if you have a factory sized spare tire there is a good chance it will give you the clearance you need.
One thing to keep in mind is using a hitch adapter like the # MPG544 will reduce the capacities of your trailer hitch receiver by 50%, so you will need to make sure your trailer does not exceed the reduced towing capacity, and the bike rack, bikes, and tongue weight of the trailer does not exceed the reduced tongue weight capacity or the 400lb tongue weight rating and 4000lb trailer weight rating of the # MPG544.
