Replacing Old Trailer Brakes on a 3,500 Pound Axle

Question:

I am currently looking for brakes for a trailer, going through your brake sections I am still not sure what will work for my application, I have measured the spindle to determine the inner and outer bearing, my internal bearing measurements are 1-1/16inch and 1-3/8. Unfortunately I am not seeing any bearing numbers on the bearings themselves. I have no idea about the manufacturer of the axle except i is square with a 4 inch , nothing listed otherwise. Current Drum markings are HD 1377, Discard PT 10.0 10, Unique Functional Products. I hope this is enough information to get either electric brakes on this trailer or replacement shoes at a minimum Thank you

The measurements you got would mean the Inner Bearing is an # L68149, and the Outer Bearing is an # L44649. This confirms you have a 3,500 pound axle. The etrailer.com Electric Brakes # AKEBRK-35-SA will be the replacement brakes needed. If you wanted to further confirm this, there are two more ways to do so.

First, measure the depth and diameter of the drum the brakes sit in. The diameter should be right at 10 inches and the depth should be right at 2 1/4 inches. There will always be oddities that come up, but this will be the standard most manufacturers use.

Second, you can measure the bolt pattern of either the flange the brakes attach to, or the bolts on the back of the brake itself. From center to center of either 2 bolts or bolt holes right next to each other, you should measure 2 7/8 inches exactly. This should be done with all sides to make sure it is a perfect square. You can also go diagonally from center of bolt or bolt holes. This will get you exactly 4 inches.
