2020 Tiguan 4Motion Towing Capacity
Question:
I’m purchasing an ultra lightweight travel trailer Rove Lite 14BH with a dry weight of 1600 pounds and electronic brakes. I currently have a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan all wheel drive 4Motion. I’m willing to transport the travel trailer dry and fill up my tanks/plug into water water at the RV resort to make the Tiguan’s 1500 pound tow rating/220 tongue weight work since I only plan to use the trailer on weekends for a one or two day getaway with the family. With all that being said, here are my questions: 1. Are the extra 100 pounds a “game changer?” 2. Should I transport the trailer with the battery and propane tank inside in my trunk to get back to 1500 pounds? 3. Does having electronic brakes on the trailer help with towing capacity?

With the vehicle towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, you should not exceed that weight. This could cause a failure and would most likely void the warranties on both the vehicle and trailer. So yes, the 100 pounds definitely makes a difference.
If you are indeed going with this model trailer, then you would want to travel with the tanks empty and as much weight removed as possible.
The electric brakes will not help with towing capacities, but definitely helps with stopping. To get those brakes working, you will need to have a few parts. The Tekonsha T-One # 118811 wiring harness would get you to the 4 Flat that the Universal Installation Kit for brake controllers # ETBC7 would piggy back off of. You would then need a brake controller like the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160, which is what i recommend using. I included an install of the # ETBC7 and # TK90160 on a Kia Sportage, but as this is universal, it wouls install the same way on your vehicle.
If there is no hitch present from the dealership, I recommend going with the Curt Class 3 Hitch # C13381. This will have the capacity needed, and with the 2 inch receiver opening, it gives you more options for accessories like bike racks or cargo carriers.
