Adding Trailer Wiring and a Brake Controller to a 1991 Dodge Ram 3/4 Ton Pickup Truck
Question:
Hi, Ive got a 1991 Dodge Ram 3/4 4x4 and a 2 axle gooseneck trailer with a 7 pin round plug. As far as I can tell the truck has never been wired for a trailer. Ive got the 7 pin socket off another bumper but no wire. Do you sell the wiring cable by the foot and could you recommend some brake controllers for this set-up.

If your 1991 Dodge Ram did not come with trailer wiring, you will first need to install a 4-Way wiring harness # 18252. You will need to use the included circuit tester to test the vehicle tail light wiring. The tail light wire with left turn signal and brake light functions will connect to the yellow wire. The tail light wire with the running lights connects to the brown wire. Right turn and stop connect to the green wire. And the white wire grounds to the vehicle frame.
Then you will need to install a 4 and 7 Way installation kit # ETBC7. Since you already have a 7-Way that matches the trailer you do not have to use the one in the kit. However, the kit also comes with all the other parts you will need for installation so I recommend using the 7-Way that is included so you get all new parts.
I have included some links that explain the installation of the # ETBC7.
For a brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is reliable, easy to use, and easy to set up. I have included a link to the installation instructions for the brake controller for you to view.
