Replacement Hub Not Fitting As Expected

Question:

just installed etrailer drum brake kit on my 16 ft tandem trailer axle. After seating hub and installing nut and cotter pin, brake assembly and drum/hub do not meet flush. About a 1/4 inch gap between the two. Seems like brake mounting flange 1/4 inch too close to trailer midline. Is like this on both sides. Do I need to cut and move mounting flange closer to axle end or leave with gap? I dont know if the gap is normal - my first experience with trailer brakes. I need an expert to tell me what needs to be done. Thx.

The brake assembly and brake hub will not meet flush, but they will be close. I would double check that you have the correct parts and that all races and seals oriented correctly and fully seated. Then reassemble and tighten crown nut down until tight, then back off to where cotter pin slots line up. At that point you should be properly assembled. I have attached a photo of an assembled brake assembly and brake hub for you to compare to. You will see that there is a gap.
