Recommended Winch for my Trailer to Pull Logs on

Question:

Im looking to mount a winch to my trailer frame at the front to pull large logs up a ramp onto my trailer. I would like a recommendation for the winch and mounting hardware if needed. I can send pics of trailer. My GMC Sierra has 7 way power at the trailer hitch. Thanks.

For pulling logs onto a trailer I recommend going with the Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch part # BDW10040 it is a 12,000 lb. winch that will get the job done for you. I've seen in the past when dragging logs they tend to dig into the ground creating extra force that needs to be overcome. This is of course if you're pulling really large logs. If you're dealing with smaller logs then a lighter winch would also do the trick.

This winch also offers a wireless remote meaning that you will be able to stand at the rear of the trailer making sure everything is moving appropriately. With other types you are limited to the length of the controls cable.

When mounting it to your trailer you an have a welding shop add a mounting plate to the front and attach it there. This generally needs to be reinforced or you can bolt it directly through the floor. When doing this a steel plate on the underside will give you the strength you need for the winch to function properly. This will require longer hardware which can be picked up locally and a hardware store.

For powering it an on board battery is the best option as drawing this much power through the trucks system is likely to overload it. An on board deep cycle class 31 is ideal and it can be recharged after use when needed. Generally a charger like the NOCO Genius Mini On-Board Battery Charger part # NOC44FR is what I recommend this can be attached to the trailer and you'll just have to provide power to it rather than getting out a charger regularly.
