Question:

If the steering lock is removed and you do not have to put key in accessory position to unlock steering do you still have to disconnect battery? Since there is no power from accessory position

When it comes to flat towing your 2016 GMC Canyon, you do have to disconnect the battery. We have to abide by what the owner's manual says, which is to ensure the steering column is unlocked and to keep the ignition key in the ACC (accessory) position. We don't have any way of knowing what might happen if you remove the steering lock and cannot recommend it. For specific instructions on this you can refer to your owner's manual; it was on page 327 of the online manual I took a look at.

In regards to the parts you need in order to flat tow your 2016 GMC Canyon, they are the following:

- Base Plate Kit: Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-523182-5
- Tow Bar: Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-522
- Safety Chains: Roadmaster 80" Coiled Safety Cables # RM-653
- Wiring Kit: Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267
- Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect # RM-766
- Supplemental Braking System: Demco SBS Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # SM99251
OR
- For a motorhome with air brakes: Demco SBS Air Force One Supplemental Braking System for Motorhomes with Air Brakes # SM99243

You may also need a high-low adapter such as # RM-070 in order to keep your tow bar level, and I've added a link to a help article which shows you how to determine if you need an adapter, as well as a link to our selection of adapters.

Additionally, I have added links to instruction manuals, video reviews and installations for you to take a look at.
