Recommended Trailer Lift Kit for Tandem Axle Trailer
Question:
I am replacing my equalizer, shackle straps, bushings and bolts on my tandem axle utility trailer. I would like to gain a little bit of tire/fender clearance. My current configuration is using 3 inch shackle straps. Can I use use the 2 inch shackle straps instead in order to gain a little bit tire/fender clearance? Would it change or affect the trailer suspension firmness any?

To gain clearance you don't want to replace the equalizer and shackle straps to do so. Instead you will want to either use an over-under kit like # K71-384-00 for 3,500 lb axles or # K71-385-00 for 5,200-7000 lb axles with 3 inch diameter. This allows you to put the leaf springs on top of the axle giving you a lift equivalent to the diameter of the axle as well as the height of the leaf spring stack.
Alternatively, you can use the Tandem Axle Lift Kit # RR23QX to add 2-1/4 inches of lift for that clearance you are seeking.
Changing equalizers and shackle straps if installed correctly will not harm suspension, however they won't increase the height of your trailer.
