Upgrading Trailer Tire Size From 4.80-8 to 4.80-12
Question:
I have a 67 aluminun camp trailer that is sound and carries no load other than its canvas top and two bunks. Lightweight. Original rims are 4x4 8inch with 4.80x8 tires. Rim measures 9inch across, but tire at bead is 8inch across. I would like to increase the rim/tire size and already have a trailer axle specialist prepared to increase height of unit on axle to provide needed room. It appears I can buy 4.80x12 tires mounted on 4x4 12inch rims. I would lean toward Load Range D not to accommodate additional load it will be kept a lightweight unit but for sturdier tire construction. I understand speed ratings on this size tire top out at 65 MPH. Will the width of a 4.80x12 be identical to a 4.80x8? Am I interpreting the differences correctly? Any thoughts on such a modification?

Helpful Expert Reply:
Yes, you can upgrade from 4.80-8 tires to 4.80-12 tires. The width of the tire and the bolt pattern will be the same so it can work. We don't have any load range D options in that combo. I recommend using the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM30620. The clearances at the fenders are the biggest issue with an upgrade in size like this.
The weight of your trailer does have an impact as well because the tire rating does sometimes cause smaller trailers to bounce or ride rough.
