How to Determine the Wire Functions on a Trailer to Install a 7-Way Blade Connector
Question:
My cargo trailer w/ elec. brakes has a 6 blade connector. It is the same size as a 7 blade connector and looks the same except it does not have the center pin. I have blue, green, yellow, brown, and white wires. It seems that the 6 blade plug is no longer available. Can you tell me how to wire a 7 blade connector w/ my 6wires?

The first thing you are going to want to do is determine the function of each of the wires. You cannot go by color alone because there is no standard color code. There are 2 ways that you can determine the wire functions on the trailer. First you can trace each wire back to see where it goes.
The other way is to attach each wire, one at a time, to a separate car battery and see what function turns on.
Once you have determined the functions you will wire in a 7-Way as follows:
If looking at the back of a trailer side 7-Way where the wires attach the center pin is for reverse lights. The 1:00 pin is 12 volt power. The 3:00 pin is right turn/brake lights. The 5:00 pin is output to the trailer brakes. The 7:00 pin is ground. The 9:00 pin is left turn and brake lights. And the 11:00 pin is running lights. A Vehicle side 7-Way would be a mirror image of this. I have linked an FAQ article that should help.
You can use a basic 7-Way trailer end like # PK12706.
