Will this extension also operate brakes on boat trailer with electric brakes....blinkers and light work...my old one had 6 pins with center on 7 way..this one only has 4 pins..

The Curt Trailer Connector Adapter - 7-Way RV Style to 5-Way Flat - 60" Cord # C57281 will give you the lights, turn signals, and reverse lockout that could be used for a hydraulic surge brake lockout. It does not give you the electric brake function.

It sounds like you only have a 4-way but want a 5-way for electric brakes, but it also sounds like you have a 7 way to convert. My recommendation is to change the trailer side wiring using the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector # HS381-9000 to give you all your features and simply disconnect the electrical before putting the trailer in the water.

What does the 5th pole of the flat connector correspond to on the 7 pole towing end of the C57281 Adapter? I'm looking for a 7 pole to 5 pole with the 5th pole being the 12v power wire.

The 5th pin would be drawing from the reverse lights circuit/pin on the tow vehicle's 7-Way. There isn't an adapter available that connects the 5th pin to the 7-Way's 12V circuit.
