Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2012 Jayco Eagle 324 BTS to Carry Bikes

Question:

Trailer frame I-beam center to center is 68 1/2. Will the C13704 work for my trailer? I have a 2012 Jayco Eagle 324BTS. The C13703 seems to have less tongue weight capacity needed for my bike rack.

I have a solution for you, but the Curt # C13704 is not going to be long enough for your 2012 Jayco Eagle 324BTS. You will need to use the # 13703, which is adjustable up to 72" wide, so it will fit on your 68-1/2" I beam frame members. Even though it only has a tongue weight capacity of 350-lbs, that's still going to be sufficient to hold even the heaviest bike rack and bikes.

It should be noted that when it comes to carrying a bike rack on the rear of a travel trailer, not all bike racks are rated for this because of the additional movement that is encountered at the rear of these; you will need a bike rack that is rated for use with this application. Additionally, the bike racks that are rated for this use are not going to be able to be used with extremely heavy bikes, like e-bikes.

Depending on the construction of your bumper you might be better served going with something like the Swagman 4 Bike Carrier RV Mounted Bike Rack # S80600 to carry bikes up to 40-lbs each. If your bumper is not a solid steel construction, you'll want to go ahead with the Curt hitch and use something like the Yakima LongHaul RV Bike Rack - 4 Bikes - 2" Hitches - Silver # Y02476 to carry your bikes. The LongHaul is able to carry bikes up to 37.5-lbs each, so it's a little bit more limited than the Swagman bumper mounted rack, but it's going to provide you with the highest capacity available in a hitch mounted rack rated for a travel trailer. Because this is a hanging rack you would need frame adapters like the Swagman # 64005 to carry any bikes that have aggressive step-through frames, or children's bikes.

I've linked one of our helpful articles on travel trailer bike racks that explains more about why these racks need to be rated for this application, as well as some review videos of the racks I've mentioned above that you may want to have a look at.
