Leaf Spring Upgrade and Over Under Conversion Kit For Montana Trailer

Question:

My axles are currently 6000lb with a 4 leaf leaf spring. It measure 1 3/4 inch by 25 7/8inch eye to eye under load. I found a 6 leaf 1 3/4inch X 24 7/8inch 7000 lb spring. the trailer also has Dexter EZ flex currently. Trying to accomplish several things, 1 new springs as I have no idea how many miles on current system, 2 a little more capacity, 3 raise my trailer a bit as it is on a angle when I tow with my 2019 f250 as the trucks are so high today this will also level the unit and give the rear bumper more clearance at some driveway approaches. I cannot find a 6000lb axle with that 25 7/8inch measurement either. wondering if the loaded measurement is the variable.

When replacing the leaf springs you do want to take into consideration that the leaf springs sag and flatten over time. The best way to measure them is when the suspension is not loaded. To measure for the correct leaf spring length, you should jack up the trailer so that the axle hangs free, then measure straight across from the center of one eye to the center of the other eye. See what your measurement is then to choose the correct length of spring.

It is okay to use a higher rated leaf spring compared to the axle on your trailer like 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 7,000-lb Trailer Axles part # e64SR. However, it will not increase the capacity of the trailer and may cause a stiffer ride which may be a good thing if your suspension was sagging. Adding new leaf springs will not raise the trailer for ground clearance. You may raise the trailer if your leaf springs are under the axle with an axle flip kit.

I recommend the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit part # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8" diameter axles or part # K71-385-00 for 3" diameter axles.

Another option to raise the trailer is to use taller hangers that would need to be removed and welded on by a professional.
