Is it Safe to Use MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender to Carry Bike Rack and Flat Tow a Jeep

Question:

I am still a little confused about pull weight capacity of this hitch extender. I have a 5K hitch on my MH. I tow a 4K jeep. I added the extender to put bikes on back of MH and still pull the Jeep. Am I within my limits. Somewhere I thought I saw where your capacity goes down with the extender.

Anytime a hitch extender like the MaxxTow Dual Hitch Extender is used it reduces the weight capacity of the trailer hitch it's installed into by 50%. The only way you can safely use it to the full capacity is if your trailer hitch is rated for 8,000 lbs towing and 800 lbs tongue.

Since the hitch on your motorhome is rated at 5K that means when using this extender that is reduced to 2,500 lbs towing/250 lbs tongue.

The safest solution that we have to offer is to use the Gen-Y Adjustable 2-Ball Mount w/ Stacked Receivers # 325-GH-313. You can just disregard the hitch balls that come with this and then use the stacked receivers to accomplish your goal. This is rated for up to 10K towing and 1.5K tongue, plus it won't reduce the weight rating of the hitch receiver on your motorhome. If you think you need more than the 5" drop/rise then you can use part # 325-GH-314 which is the same thing just with a 7-1/2" drop/rise.

Review videos have been attached for both of these that you can check out.
