What you are explaining is very common. It sounds like your 2004 Ford F-350 Super Duty pickup truck is equipped with a factory 4-way connection that can be replaced with Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package part # C55265 with square connection points.
If you need to upgrade your 4-way to a 7-way plug the kit part # ETBC7 is needed because there is not a plug and play 7-way option with a square connector. The kit comes with all of the compenents needed to install a fully functioning 7-way plug. The Curt 4-way plugs into the pigtail coming off of the 7-way plug for lighting functions so you will only need to splice the remaining wires for 12V battery hot lead, trailer brakes and reverse lights. I have attached a diagram for your reference. Please let me know if you need a brake controller and I can make additional recommendations.
