Parts Needed to Add Wiring for Trailer Lights and Brakes

Question:

I am looking to completely rewire my entire 16 foot trailer with 2 3500 lb axles. Can you recommend a kit or wiring harness for a 7 position plug that does have electric brakes? I also need all new lights, basically all I have is the frame and axles with the wheels and drums and brakes. THX

I recommend using the etrailer Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector # HS381-9000 to start off. This gives you a 7-Way connector and a clean and organized way to connect all of your wiring.

Then for the wiring for your lights I recommend using the Wishbone Style Wiring Harness # A25W2GWB. This is 25' long which will give you enough for the length of your 16' trailer plus some extra wiring to make sure you have enough to connect all of your lights. You will just need to cut off the 4-Way connector and connect this wiring inside your junction box.

For brake wiring you need at least 10 Gauge which you can purchase by the foot using part # 10-1-1.

You'll also need some butt connectors for your wiring. I recommend using heat shrink butt connectors because they have a much more secure connection than standard butt connectors. We have the 10-pack # DW05744-10 for your lighting and then the 5-pack # DW05745-5 of larger connectors for your brake wiring.

The correct amount of lighting on your trailer can vary by size and design. I've attached a link to both our selection of trailer lights and a helpful article to help guide you through what you need. If you'd like me to look for specific lights I can do that if you send some photos of your trailer.
