Upgrading 4-Way of Trailer to 7-Way to Wire Battery for Powering Trailer Interior/Exterior Lights

Question:

Hi, I want to power my trailer interior and exterior LED lights when not connected to my truck. Do I have have to install a battery or is their a portable battery pack/inverter unit that I can use . I have a flat plug connection that I have put some gator clips on to make a simple connection but would like a more professional set up. What do you recommend? Thank you,

For what you are looking for the standard solution that is tried and true is to install a vehicle battery in the trailer to power the lighting of your trailer.

What you'll want to do for the trailer wiring is install the junction box 7-way kit # HS381-9000 this is specifically designed for upgrading a trailer like yours from a 4-way to a 7-way. If you check out the picture I attached you'll see what the junction box does basically. The ring terminals on the bottom side of the posts are from the trailer wiring and then the top is for what runs to the included 7-way. This gives you an easy way organize and mount the wiring on the trailer.

A wire from the positive post of the battery runs to the 12 volt accessory circuit of the junction box which then runs to the 12 volt accessory circuit of the 7-way which is powered by the vehicle's battery. This will put a small maintenance charge on the trailer battery as you tow it.
