Is 30A Relay Required to Use Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller with 2015 Audi Q7
Question:
Dear e-Trailer, I am currently using the P3 in our 2017 VW Touareg with our boat trailer which has electric-over-hydraulic brakes great system from you by the way. It was just plug and play, once I made the connector from VW parts and put an adapter in the 7-way due to LED trailer lights to activate trailer mode. No relay needed. Now we are switching to a 2015 Audi Q7 and Ive read conflicting information online on whether I need to wire a 30A 12V 4-way relay into the connector harness - some people say Tekonsha has reprogrammed the P3s starting about 8 years ago so the brake voltage threshold is different so the relay is no longer needed. Do you happen to know? I presume the Touareg and Q7 are fairly similar electronically so hopefully it will work, but on the other hand maybe I just got lucky and I really should have put the relay...? Thanks

It is true that the older version of the P3 # 90195 and older vehicles that have varying voltage on the brake signal required a 30A relay system to help with compatibility. I reached out to my contact at Tekonsha and he said that while the newer P3 and newer vehicles, like your 2017 VW Touareg and your 2015 Audi Q7, interact better with the brake controller and you might not need it, he recommends installing one anyways just to be on the safe side of things. We don't have any relays that meet what you're needing so you'll need to source it elsewhere if you want to install one.
