Will Installing a Hitch on a 2020 Audi Q5 Reduce Functioning of Blind Spot Detection System

Question:

Thanks for your great answer! I think the dealer was not saying that the hitch itself would interfere with the blind spot sensor, but that the necessary removal of bumper cover and trim to install the hitch is what could mess up the sensor. I just wanted to clarify that. Thanks also for suggesting that Thule hitch.

I will say that this is the first time I've ever seen anything regarding the blind spot detection system being rendered inoperable on the Audi Q5 when you install a trailer hitch. In addition to the installations we've performed in our shop, many more customers have installed the Curt # C13331 hitch or other hitches designed for the 2018-2020 Audi Q5 and none of them have reported and difficulty with the blind spot monitoring feature.

From what I was able to find in my research, the blind spot detection system has been a feature on the Audi Q5 since at least 2016, so needless to say this is not something that manufacturers of hitches would be unfamiliar with. I would also say that from what I can tell, these sensors are towards the corners of the vehicles and nested in the bumper, so I can't see anything with the hitch even interfering with the operation of this system with a trailer hitch and bike rack installed on the rear of your vehicle.

If you don't already have a 2 bike rack to pair with your new hitch, the Thule EasyFold XT 2 # TH903202 is a great option because of how easy it makes loading and unloading bikes. The EasyFold comes with an integrated ramp that can be used to make loading/unloading of bikes a breeze- no lifting of heavy bikes on and off at your home and destination. The EasyFold, as the name implies, also can be removed from the hitch and folded up for easy storage when it's not in use. This rack also comes with locks included to secure your bikes to the rack and the rack to the vehicle, so you never have to worry about someone walking off with your investment. If you'd like the extra long ramp that goes with the EasyFold XT 2, you can add part # TH933402 to your rack to make it even easier to get your bikes loaded up.

I've linked an installation video of the Curt hitch as well as one of our review videos of the EasyFold XT 2 and the extra-long loading ramp so you can see everything in action.

Not a problem! I see what you're saying, so thank you for the clarification. I could absolutely see how someone who is unaware that the sensor was there could potentially damage it while taking off or putting back on the bumper on the vehicle. If you notice around the 9:00 mark of the install video, you do unplug all of the wiring in the bumper area- and I can see a lot of people missing that step and damaging those sensors when they remove the bumper. I'm confident that as long as the person installing it is aware that it's there and care is taken, you won't experience any issues.
