Installing 7-Way Trailer Connector on 1996 GMC Jimmy

Question:

Hello, I already have a 4-prong flat trailer attachment on my Jimmy with the 4 other wires free. I would like to have the instructions on how to wire for a 7 prong hookup, similar to the How To Install A 7-Way Trailer Connector On A 1994 GMC Jimmy posted earlier. Thanks!

If you take a look at the photo I edited for you, you can see how to wire the 7-way connector on the vehicle. Make sure to wire by function, not wire color.

Perhaps a better way of doing this would be to use an adapter like the # 37185. If you need to install a brake controller, you could use the ETBC7 install kit mentioned in the question you referred to. The 37185 adapter is included in the kit, and would plug directly into your existing 4-way, leaving 3 remaining wires to be attached. The white wire would be grounded to clean metal on the vehicle, the black wire which supplies 12-volts for any trailer accessories requiring power or to maintain a trailer-mounted battery would connect to the positive battery post via a 40 amp breaker included in the kit, and the blue wire would carry the output voltage from the brake controller.

I have provided links to some FAQ articles that you might find helpful. I have also linked you to an install video showing a brake controller being installed on a 1993 Suburban. Different vehicle, but the procedure would be similar if you were wanting to install a controller on your Jimmy.
