Recommended Parts To Tow Malone Kayak Trailer With 2020 Hyundai Kona Limited

Question:

We also have a 2017 Outback, so that question was answered. Im looking for a recommendation on a hitch for a 2020 Hyundai Kona limited, 1.6T. Mostly used for a two bike carrier, and also pull a Malone two kayak trailer, thanks.

I recommend Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11529 which is designed for the 2020 Hyundai Kona as long as it is not the all electric model. There is no drilling required for installation so it is a straight forward install. However, the hitch has Class I a 1-1/4" receiver tube so the bike rack must be compatible with Class I hitches and have a 1-1/4" shank. The tongue weight rating of the hitch is 200 lbs so you want to be sure not to exceed that with the Malone trailer.

If your bike rack does not have a 1-1/4" shank, I recommend the Swagman Chinook Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # S64683 which is a platform rack so you can easily load and unload the bikes. It can handle 45 lbs per bike. It also only weighs 47 lbs so you won't exceed the tongue weight rating of the hitch.

It sounds like you may have the Malone MicroSport Trailer for 2 Kayaks - J-Style - 13' Long - 800 lbs part # MPG461G2 which has a 2" ball coupler. To tow the Malone MicroSport with the Class I hitch you will need the recommended ball mount for the Kona part # C45521 and 2" ball part # C40018 that fits the ball hole diameter of the ball mount.

To illuminate the lights on the Malone trailer you will need a 4-pole flat connection on the Kona, for that I recommend ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness w/ 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector and Installation Kit part # 119250KIT which clamps to the vehicle wiring instead of splicing in like the other wiring options. Since there is not a plug and play option available for the Kona yet this is your best option.
