Easy Way to Disconnect Battery When Flat Towing a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk

Question:

Saw your post on flat towing a 2019 but I just bought a 2020 and no one at my local Jeep dealer has a clue how to do this. It tells me to disconnect the negative battery cable as well as do about fifteen steps to put in neutral. Is it really necessary to battery and if you do, won’t I have to reset everything in Jeep every time I do this? Also, if that is true, is there a way to install a negative battery cut off switch as it is almost impossible to easily get to battery? Any help appreciated as Jeep impossible to deal with!

We have to recommend you stick with what the manufacturer recommends for flat towing your 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Otherwise you run the very high risk of damaging the vehicle when flat towing it. Disconnecting the battery will reset your stereo presets, but it's better than having to have the transmission rebuilt.

We do have the automatic battery disconnect kit part # RM-766 which will even put a maintenance charge on the towed vehicle battery as you are travelling. This would be your easiest solution to disconnect the battery and keep it charged.

If I disconnect the battery to flat tow my grand cherokee... what will power my brake buddy?

If you're using a braking system that draws power from the towed vehicle battery (your Jeep Grand Cherokee) then you're going to want to install the Battery Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25 so that your motorhome battery bank can help keep your Jeep battery from getting completely drained. This would be the case whether you had to disconnect the battery or not. Be sure to reference your copy of the owner's manual for flat towing.
