What Adapters Are Needed To Install Transmission Cooler on 2009 GMC Sierra

Question:

This adapter is recommended for my 2009 GMC Sierra. In a response to a question it was said that this fits into the cooler so one can add an additional cooler in line with the stock cooler. Which adapter is required to plumb the oil from the cooler to be installed back into the line going back to the transmission? Stock cooler - D13035 - D13504 - ? - line originally coming from stock cooler.

For installation of a transmission cooler on your 2009 GMC Sierra with the 4.3L V6 engine you will use the Derale Radiator Adapter, part # D13018. If you have the V8 engine ( 4.8L, 5.3L, or 6.0L) you will use the Derale Radiator Adapter, part # D13035.

I have posted a photo to show the typical transmission cooler installation. For your Sierra you will use the correct Derale Radiator Adapter Fittings (# D13018, or # D13035) for the engine you have, then install the adapter in the radiator tank to allow you to connect the hose to the transmission cooler.

If you will be using the # D13035 adapter, the installation will be done in the following way. The original transmission cooler line is held in by an E-clip. Once you locate the E-clip at the radiator housing you will need to push in on the transmission cooler return line, and use a small screwdriver to pry the E-clip off of the line. The transmission line will then come out of the radiator housing.

You will then install the # D13035 adapter, using the E-clip to hold the fitting in place. If this fitting leaks, an O-Ring in the radiator at this location will need to be replaced, these are available at a local auto parts store.

Once the new fitting is in place you will install the cooler hose on the fitting, run it to the trans cooler, then run another length of hose from the other fitting on the cooler to the return line that was removed from the radiator earlier. Clamp all of the hose ends tight and top off the transmission fluid. Installation is complete.

I am including a couple of links to FAQ pages on transmission coolers.
