You are correct the 4-Pole Flat wiring for the 2012 Nissan NV 3500 is part # 118553 which will power the lights on the trailer. It sounds like your trailer has brakes and you need a 7-Way plug which would require some hard wiring.
I recommend Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller part # ETBC7 because it comes with all of the components needed to upgrade the 4-Way plug to a 7-way plug. I have attached an installation video on a 2012 Nissan NV. The installation does require extending the wires from the plug to the front of the Nissan to the brake controller and the vehicle's battery.
If you do not already have a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 part # 90195 and brake controller adapter for the Nissan part # 3050-P. The Prodigy P3 is a very reliable brake controller that allows you to store up to 5 settings for towing multiple trailers. The best thing about the P3 is the clear LCD display that will tell you if there is an issue with your trailer setup instead of using cryptic troubleshooting codes like other brake controllers. The adapter will allow you to plug the brake controller into the factory port under the dash of the Nissan.
