Best Brake Controller for 2019 Dodge Durango with Aftermarket 7-Way Connector
Question:
We have a pop up camper that is roughly 2660 lbs. we have nothing to tow it with so we purchased a 2019 Dodge Durango. Dealership is installing the hitch and a 7 pin connecter since that is what our trailer has. Our problem is that our trailer has electric brakes and we are thinking we need more equipment. We looked at the brake controllers but apparently those only plug in if your vehicle is equipped with the full tow package which ours does not have. Is there any assistance you can give? Thanks!

To power the trailer's electric brakes you do indeed need to add a brake controller to your 2019 Dodge Durango and I have a perfect option for you.
Since your Durango didn't come with the factory tow package (and thus doesn't have a factory plug behind the dash for a brake controller) BUT is currently getting set up with a 7-Way connector I highly recommend the Curt Echo Brake Controller # C51180. This is a unique controller that actually plugs right into the 7-Way connector at the rear of your Durango and simply pairs to your smart phone via a Bluetooth connection. And that's it.
This unit does not require any connections in the cab of your Durango or any extra components that need to be mounted. The higher price point on the Echo will be easily offset by the greatly reduced installation time and lack of extra wiring needed compared to most other traditional brake controllers.
The only thing you will need to have on the 7-Way is an active 12V circuit. This is the pin at the 1 o'clock position on the 7-Way and I simply recommend asking the dealership if they are running this wire. If they weren't already then it's easy enough to add to their to-do list by running a length of 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1 from this pin up to the Durango's battery through a breaker like # 9510.
Once the Echo is plugged in and paired you will use your phone to adjust any settings or activate the manual override. You can simply take the Echo out when the trip is over and plug it back in when it's time to hook the trailer back up. It can also be easily transferred to other tow vehicles if the situation ever comes up.
I have attached a video demonstration that you can check out as well.
